Irish Equine Centre

The Irish Equine Centre (IEC) is an independent, not-for-profit organization whose aim is to protect the wellbeing of Ireland’s horse population. Established following the outbreak that occurred in 1979, this award-winning facility is the primary equine diagnostic and research facility in Ireland. The IEC is also one of just three OIE (the World Organisation for Animal Health) Reference Laboratories for equine influenza in the world, with the OIE being the veterinary equivalent of the World Health Organization. The provision of scientific assistance and research information is one of the core functions of this laboratory. Since its establishment, the Centre has expanded its capabilities to include diagnostic testing for other farm and domestic animals, as well as safety testing in food and animal products covering forensics, nutrition, foods, feeds, water, vaccines and drugs. Its large customer base includes veterinary practices, racing yards, studs, vaccine and pharmaceutical companies and the Irish Department of Food, Agriculture & the Marine.
